Swap a clip

Published · Updated · View as Markdown

Said a line more than once? Bang AI keeps every recording. Auto Edit puts the clearest one in your video, and in the editor you tap the badge on a clip to swap in another recording of the same line. To change the clip itself, select it and press Replace. Swapping works on iPhone, the web and the Mac, Replace is on iPhone and the web, and neither costs credits.

Bang AI is on iPhone, the web and the Mac.

Steps

  1. Film the line more than once, then run Auto Edit. It keeps the clearest recording of each line and remembers the others.
  2. Open the version in the editor. A clip with other recordings of its line shows a badge on the timeline with how many there are.
  3. Tap or click the badge. The list shows every recording of that line with its words and length, the AI pick and the one in use.
  4. Press a recording's play button to hear it alone, without changing the video.
  5. Tap or click the recording you want. Bang AI swaps it into the video and plays it once; undo puts the old one back.
  6. To film or pick a new clip instead, select the clip and press Replace, then slide the new clip to line it up and press Use these.

Why Bang AI keeps your other recordings

When you film a line more than once, Auto Edit works out which recordings say the same thing and puts one of them in the video. It marks that one AI pick and says why it won:

  • Clearest: the cleanest delivery of the line.
  • Fewest ums: the fewest filler words.
  • Most complete: the one that says the whole line.
  • Latest: the last one you filmed.

The others stay with the video, so a line you'd rather say another way is never more than a tap away. A line you filmed once has nothing to swap.

Swap a line from the timeline

A clip with other recordings shows a badge with their count. Tap it on iPhone, or click it on the web and the Mac, and the list opens: each recording with its words, its length and a play button. The AI pick wears its reason, and the one in the video is marked In use.

Press play to hear a recording alone; the video doesn't change. Tap or click one to swap it in. Bang AI selects the new clip and plays it once, and the whole swap is one undo step. Text, pictures and sounds that come after the line move by the difference in length, and the captions become the new recording's own words.

Swipe through a line in the script panel

In the iPhone and Mac apps, the script panel folds a line's other recordings into its row and shows a dot for each one. Swipe the row sideways to move to the next recording or the one before; the list stops at either end rather than wrapping round. It is the quickest way to compare a few versions of the same sentence while you read down the script, and each swipe is a swap you can undo.

Replace a clip with a new one

Select a clip and press Replace, the tool next to Split.

  • On iPhone, the camera opens over the editor with the clip's words in the teleprompter. Film it again as often as you like, slide the footage under the window, which is exactly the clip's length, and press Use these. The new clip plays at once, and its captions follow once Bang AI has its words.
  • On the web, Replace Clip opens a picker: Your clips or From your computer. A clip shorter than the one you are replacing is marked Too short. Slide to line up the new clip, then press Use these.

The Mac app doesn't offer Replace, since it doesn't film. A clip you replaced on iPhone or the web still plays on the Mac as saved.

Keep your voice, change the picture

If you used Extract audio on a clip, Replace changes only the picture. The new clip goes in muted, every sound stays where it was, and Bang AI says Clip replaced, its sound stays. Use it to lay a product shot or a demo over a line you were happy with, the way you would cut to b-roll, without losing a word of what you said.

On iPhone, Settings, then Search & Editor, then Replace Clips turns the Replace tool on or off. It starts on, and the change applies the next time you open the editor.

Limits

  • A swap needs a line you filmed more than once, in a version Auto Edit made.
  • Swapping works on iPhone, the web and the Mac. Replace is on iPhone, where it films a new clip, and on the web, where you pick one from your clips or your computer.
  • A replacement must be at least as long as the clip it replaces.
  • The Replace Clips switch is on iPhone only, under Settings, then Search & Editor.
  • From a chat, swaps and replacements use only the clips already in that video, and each edit saves over the video.
  • A chat edit can be undone only in the Bang AI web editor, and only when the video is open there as the edit lands.

Troubleshooting

A clip has no badge.
That line was filmed once. The badge also hides in Select mode, on a locked clip and on a clip too short to hold it.
There's no Replace tool.
On iPhone, turn on Settings, then Search & Editor, then Replace Clips, and open the editor again. The Mac app doesn't offer Replace; use iPhone or the web.
A clip in the Replace picker says Too short.
It is shorter than the clip you are replacing. Pick a longer clip, or on iPhone keep filming until the footage fills the window.
Clip replaced, its sound stays.
That clip's audio was extracted, so only the picture changed. If you wanted the new clip's sound as well, undo to put the old clip back.
The captions don't match the new clip yet.
On iPhone, a clip you just filmed gets its captions once Bang AI has its words. If one word is still wrong after that, fix it from Captions.
The chat says the video changed since it last read it.
Your last edit may already have applied. Ask the chat to read the video again before it swaps anything.

Questions, answered.

Does swapping or replacing a clip cost credits?

No. Swapping a recording, replacing a clip and every other change you make by hand in the editor are free. Credits pay for things like Auto Edit and captions.

Can I go back to the recording Auto Edit picked?

Yes. Open the list from the badge again and choose the one marked AI pick, or press undo straight after the swap. Every recording of the line stays in the list.

Why did my text move after I swapped a line?

The new recording is a different length, so everything that starts after the line moves by the difference. Text that starts on the line keeps its start.

Can my AI chat film or upload a new recording?

No. A chat can swap between recordings and replace clips with clips already in that video. To add new footage, film or upload it in Bang AI first.

Why don't I see a badge on any clip?

Each line in that video was filmed once, so there is nothing to swap. Film the lines you want options for a few times, then run Auto Edit again.
