# Spoken overlays

Published November 1, 2026 · Updated November 1, 2026

Add a few images to your Overlays library, then say "overlay" and a few words while you film, like "overlay the before photo". Turn on Spoken Overlays when you press Auto Edit, and Bang AI cuts those words out of the video and puts the overlay that matches best on screen beside that sentence. It works on iPhone, the web and the Mac, and it adds 5 credits to an Auto Edit, only when your library holds overlays.

Works on

- iPhone
- Web
- Mac

[Get started](https://app.morebangers.com/)

Bang AI is on iPhone, the web and the Mac.

## Steps

1. Add overlays to your library: on iPhone and the Mac, open Overlays and press Add from Photos, Add from Files or Create Overlay; on the web, open the editor's Image tool and press Add Overlay.
2. Rename each overlay with the words you'll say, like "before photo" or "serum bottle".
3. While filming, say "overlay" and those words, then carry on talking.
4. Open Options and turn on Spoken Overlays. It starts off for a new version, so check it's on before you press Auto Edit.
5. Under Advanced, set how long spoken overlays stay up, if the defaults don't suit your pace.
6. Press Auto Edit, then watch the new version and move, retime or delete any overlay in the editor.

## Build your Overlays library

Overlays are the images you want on screen while you talk: a product shot, a screenshot, a logo. In the iPhone and Mac apps, open Overlays from the Auto Edit options or from the editor, then add one in three ways.

- **Add from Photos**: pick an image from your photo library.
- **Add from Files**: pick an image file.
- **Create Overlay**: make a new one (below).

When you add an overlay, Bang AI writes a name and a description for it. Tap one to rename it. Search the library by **Meaning**, to find what an image shows, or by **Exact words**, to find a name. Deleting an overlay leaves nothing in its place in the versions that show it.

## Create an overlay

Create Overlay has three kinds, so you don't need a design app for the usual ones.

- **Describe**: write what you want and Bang AI makes an AI image. Detailed costs 15 credits and Quick costs 2. If an image can't be made, its credits come back.
- **Photo**: pick a product shot or something you hold up, and your iPhone or Mac cuts out the subject. Free.
- **Text**: ready-made cards for a Price Tag, a Discount Code, Link in Bio or a Star Rating. Free.

Price tags and discount codes suit [TikTok Shop affiliate videos](https://morebangers.com/tiktok-shop-affiliate-videos/), where the offer is the point of the video.

## On the web

The web app has no separate library page. Open a video in the editor, choose the Image tool and press **Add Overlay**. From there you can search your overlays by Meaning or Exact words, add one **From your computer** (PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF or HEIC, up to 20 MB), which joins your library, or press **Create**.

On the web, Create makes only Describe images. Photo cutouts and text cards point you to Bang AI for Mac. Your library is the same on every device, so an overlay you make on iPhone or the Mac is ready for a web Auto Edit.

## Say it while filming

Say the word "overlay", then name what to show: "overlay the serum bottle", "overlay the before photo". Auto Edit cuts those words, so viewers never hear them, and shows the overlay over the sentence beside where you said it, placed clear of your face.

Bang AI matches your words to an overlay's name first. When at least half of the words you said are in an overlay's name, that is a word match, and a word match beats a match on what an image shows. When two overlays match as well as each other, the newest wins. So the surest way to get the right image is to name it with the words you will say.

"Overlay" used as a noun, as in "a nice overlay", doesn't count, and neither does "overlay right here", which names nothing.

## Turn it on in Auto Edit

Spoken Overlays is an extra in the Auto Edit options. It starts off for a new version, so check it's on before you press [Auto Edit](https://morebangers.com/help/auto-edit/). With no overlays in your library there is no switch: the iPhone and Mac apps show an **Add Overlays** button in its place, and the web says to add overlays first.

Under Advanced, **How long spoken overlays stay up** sets two limits. An overlay stays up while its sentence plays, but never for less than the shortest time (0.5 to 5 seconds) or more than the longest (2 to 20 seconds). Raise the shortest when overlays flash by on short lines, and lower the longest when one lingers on a long sentence.

## What it costs

Spoken Overlays adds 5 credits to an Auto Edit, and only when your library holds overlays. It never costs anything outside an Auto Edit. If the version fails, every credit comes back.

Adding overlays from Photos, Files or your computer is free, and so are photo cutouts and text cards. Describe images cost 15 credits (Detailed) or 2 (Quick). Moving or deleting an overlay in the editor costs nothing. [Edit like a video](https://morebangers.com/help/edit-like-a-video/) can copy another video's overlays with yours for 5 credits, and [Credits](https://morebangers.com/help/credits/) lists every price.

## Ask your AI chat

With Bang AI added to [ChatGPT, Claude or Claude Code](https://morebangers.com/integrations/), ask in your own words, or paste one of these:

- Add the title 'Get up. Stay up.' from 0:19 to the end

ChatGPT, Claude and Claude Code. Adds a text overlay to the saved video for that stretch.
- Move the title to the top of the frame

All three chats. Moves a text overlay already in the video.
- Make the 'Link in bio' text show from 0:05 to 0:10

All three chats. Retimes an overlay already in the video, including one a spoken overlay placed.
- Put an arrow from the top right pointing to the middle at 0:12

All three chats. Adds an arrow for 3 seconds from 0:12. A chat can't see the video, so say where in the frame it goes. It can add arrows, boxes and lines, but not images.
- Delete the arrow

All three chats. Removes it from the saved video. There's no undo from the chat, though it can add a new arrow if you change your mind.

## Limits

- A chat can't add images or make spoken overlays. ChatGPT, Claude and Claude Code can add text and shapes, and move, retime, crop or delete images already in the video, but they can't add a product shot, logo or code from your library.
- Spoken overlays are placed only by an Auto Edit, and they cost 5 credits, only when your library holds overlays.
- On the web, Create Overlay makes only Describe images. Photo cutouts and text cards are made in the iPhone and Mac apps.
- On the web, an overlay from your computer can be a PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF or HEIC file of up to 20 MB.
- An overlay stays up while its sentence plays, within the shortest (0.5 to 5 seconds) and longest (2 to 20 seconds) times set under Advanced.
- Deleting an overlay from your library leaves nothing in its place in the versions that show it.

## Troubleshooting

**The Spoken Overlays row has no switch, only Add Overlays or "Add overlays first".**: Your library has no overlays yet. Add one from Photos, Files or Create Overlay, or on the web from the editor's Image tool, then open the Auto Edit options again.

**The wrong overlay showed up.**: Rename your overlays so each name holds the words you say for it. When two match as well as each other the newest wins, so rename or delete the older one. Then fix this version in the editor, or press New Version.

**No overlay showed up where I said "overlay".**: Press New Version and turn on Spoken Overlays in its options. It starts off for a new version, so check it's on before you press Auto Edit. Check too that an overlay's name shares words with what you said.

**The overlay comes off too soon or stays too long.**: In the Auto Edit options, open Advanced, then How long spoken overlays stay up, and change the shortest or longest time before the next cut.

**Couldn't create the image.**: Your credits for that image are back. Try again, or change the words when it says they can't be made into an image.

**Photo or text says to cut out photos in Bang AI for Mac.**: On the web, Create makes only Describe images. Make cutouts and text cards in the iPhone or Mac app; they join the same library, ready for any device.

## Questions, answered.

**Do I have to say the word "overlay"?**

Yes. Auto Edit listens for "overlay" followed by the words that name what to show, and it cuts both from the video.

**Which overlay shows when two of them match?**

The one whose name holds more of the words you said. When two match as well as each other, the newest one wins.

**Can I change a spoken overlay after the cut?**

Yes. Open the version in the editor and move, retime or delete it, or ask your AI chat to move, retime or delete it for you.

**Can my AI chat add a spoken overlay?**

No. A chat can't add images from your library or place spoken overlays. It can add text and shapes, and move, retime, crop or delete images already in the video.

**Why is there no Spoken Overlays switch?**

Your library is empty. The iPhone and Mac apps show an Add Overlays button in its place, and the web says to add overlays first. Add one from Photos, Files or Create Overlay, or from the web editor's Image tool, and the switch appears.
