# False start

Published November 1, 2026 · Updated November 1, 2026

A false start is a line you begin, abandon and begin again: "This serum is, no wait. This serum is the only one that didn't break me out." Everyone does it when talking to a camera, and the fix in the edit is to cut the abandoned part and keep the clean version. Bang AI, the AI video editor for people who talk to the camera, always cuts repeated tries at a line when you press Auto Edit, and when you said a whole line more than once, in one recording or several, it keeps the other tries so you can swap one in later.

## In plain words

When you start saying something, stop partway, and start again. The first, broken attempt gets cut, and only the clean version stays in the video.

## The technical detail

A disfluency in which the speaker abandons an utterance and restarts it, often with a repair or rephrase. In editing, the reparandum (the abandoned span) is cut and the repaired utterance kept; across separate recordings of the same line, the editor selects one and holds the rest as alternates.

## What one sounds like

False starts come in a few shapes, and spotting the shape tells you where to cut.

- **The stop**: "So the reason I, sorry. So the reason I switched..."
- **The rephrase**: "It's really, it's honestly the softest..."
- **The full redo**: you say the whole sentence, dislike it, and say it again from the top.

In each case the second attempt is the one you meant. The first is the part a viewer should never hear.

## Keep rolling instead of stopping

When a line goes wrong, the instinct is to stop recording and start over. Resist it. Every stop and start costs you the energy you had built up, and the first second of each new clip is often stiff.

Instead, keep the camera running, pause for a breath, and say the line again. One long recording with a few restarts in it is easier to film and gives the editor everything it needs. Each restart that says the whole line again gives you another try to choose from later.

## Restarting so the cut is clean

How you restart decides how easy the cut is.

1. Stop at the end of a word, not in the middle of one.
2. Pause for a second, so there is a clear gap to cut in.
3. Start the whole sentence again from its first word, rather than picking up halfway.
4. Reset your face and posture to where they were before the slip.

A restart from the top gives a complete line that stands on its own. A patch from the middle leaves two halves that rarely match in tone.

## What Auto Edit does with repeated tries

[Auto Edit](https://morebangers.com/help/auto-edit/) works from the words in your clips, so it can hear when you said the same line twice. Repeated tries at a line are always cut, along with silence and lines that aren't clear, and no option keeps them. Only one version of each line goes into the video.

When you said a whole line more than once, in one recording or in separate ones, Bang AI works out which tries say the same thing, puts one in the video and marks it as the AI pick, with its reason: Clearest, Fewest ums, Most complete or Latest. The other tries stay with the video. A try you broke off halfway isn't a whole line, so it is cut and not kept.

In a clip with two people, one person repeating the other's words isn't a false start, and the [two-person UGC video template](https://morebangers.com/templates/two-person-ugc-video/) covers how Auto Edit reads a clip like that.

## Choosing another try later

In the editor, a clip with other tries of its line shows a badge with their count. Tap it on iPhone, or click it on the web and the Mac, and a list opens with each try's words, its length and a play button. Press play to hear one alone, then tap or click it to swap it in. The whole swap is one undo step, and swapping costs no credits.

In the iPhone and Mac apps you can also swipe a line's row in the script panel to move between its tries. [Swap a clip](https://morebangers.com/help/swap-a-clip/) covers every step.

## Restarts that are hard to cut

Some slips are trickier than others, whoever does the editing.

- Restarting halfway with different words, so neither version is a complete sentence.
- Laughing into the next attempt, which leaves the clean line with a giggle at its start.
- Changing your energy a lot between tries, so the kept line doesn't match the ones around it.
- Saying "wait, let me do that again" in the middle of a line you then finish, which turns one sentence into a puzzle.

When you notice one of these, stop, breathe and say the full line again from its first word.

## Questions, answered.

**Is a false start the same as a filler word?**

No. A filler word fills a pause inside a line, like um or uh. A false start abandons the line and begins it again. Auto Edit always cuts repeated tries, and cuts fillers while Remove Ums is on, as it is when you start.

**Can I go back to the try Auto Edit didn't choose?**

Yes, when that try said the whole line. Open the badge on the clip and pick another try, or the one marked AI pick to return. A try you broke off halfway isn't kept.

**Should I start over in a new clip or keep going?**

Keep going. Pause, then say the full line again in the same recording. It keeps your energy up and leaves a clean gap for the cut.

**Why don't I see a badge on my clip?**

You said that line once, so there is nothing to swap. Say the lines you want options for a few times, each from its first word, then run Auto Edit again.

**Can my AI chat pick a different try?**

Yes. ChatGPT, Claude and Claude Code can swap a line for another try of it on a video you've already cut, when you said that line more than once.
