# Animated captions

Published November 1, 2026 · Updated November 1, 2026

Animated captions are on-screen captions that move in time with your voice: each word pops in as you say it, the current word lights up karaoke-style, or a phrase slides up into place. They are the caption style of short-form video, because they pull the eye along the sentence even with the sound off. Bang AI, the AI video editor for people who talk to the camera, writes word-by-word captions from what you said and lets you choose the look, the animation and how many words show at a time.

Bang AI is on iPhone, the web and the Mac.

## In plain words

Captions that move with your voice. Words pop in, light up or slide in as you say them, instead of whole sentences sitting still at the bottom.

## The technical detail

Open captions timed at the word level from a transcript's word timestamps, rendered with per-word or per-phrase entrance animations and highlight states, then composited into the picture. Display pacing, highlight colour and entrance motion are styling layers over the same timed text.

## Word-by-word, karaoke and pop

Most moving caption styles are a mix of three ideas.

- **Pacing**: how much text is on screen at once, from a single word to a full line.
- **Highlight**: which word is marked as you say it, by colour, size or a box behind it. That is the karaoke effect.
- **Entrance**: how each word or phrase arrives, by popping, fading, sliding or typing on.

A caption can use one of these or all three. Plain subtitles use none: a full sentence appears, sits, then disappears.

## Why moving text holds the eye

Many people scroll with the sound off, so the captions carry the words for them. Motion matters because the eye follows change. A word appearing exactly as it is spoken gives the viewer a reason to keep looking at the screen, and it keeps sound-on and sound-off viewers in step with you.

There is a cost. Every moving thing competes with your face and the product. The more the captions animate, the less attention is left for everything else.

## Matching the style to the video

Let the tone pick the caption, not the other way round.

- A high-energy tip or a list can carry bold, one-word-at-a-time captions with a pop.
- A calm skincare routine or a personal story reads better with a phrase at a time and a gentle fade.
- A tutorial with steps often suits clean lines that stay on screen long enough to read twice.

Stay with one style for the whole video. Switching halfway reads as a mistake. For ideas, see [caption style examples](https://morebangers.com/examples/caption-style-examples/).

## Rules that keep them readable

- Use a heavy font with an outline, shadow or plate behind it, so it stays clear over a bright background.
- Keep captions clear of your face and of the strips where the app's buttons sit. The [safe-zone checker](https://morebangers.com/tools/safe-zone-checker/) shows where those are.
- Show a few words at a time at most, so nobody has to read a paragraph.
- Highlight only the words that matter. When everything is coloured, nothing stands out.
- Keep fillers like um and uh out of the captions, even when they stay in the sound.

## Looks, animations and pacing in Bang AI

Turn on Captions in [Auto Edit](https://morebangers.com/help/auto-edit/), or add them later in the editor with the Captions tool, on iPhone, the web or the Mac. The Captions panel then gives you:

- **Looks**: Pop, Karaoke, Plate, Caps, Subtitle, Bubble, Aesthetic, Neon, Typewriter, One word, Clean and Spotlight.
- **Animations**: None, Pop, Fade, Slide up, Typewriter or Bounce.
- **Pacing**: One word, Phrase or Lines at a time.

Use Apply to all captions to restyle every caption at once, and Make default for new edits to start your next videos the same way. Hide ums and uhs, at the end of Looks, keeps fillers out of the captions.

## Marking the words that matter

Highlight style in Bang AI picks out key words. **Keywords** colours them in a colour you choose, **Emoji** adds emoji beside them (Off, Some or Lots), and **Spoken word** marks each word as you say it. Press Refresh AI marks to have Bang AI find them again; a word you marked or cleared yourself keeps what you chose.

A single word's menu goes further, with Hide word, Supersize, Colour, Emoji and Timing. Supersize one word per sentence at most, and the video's main claim jumps out.

## When the motion gets in the way

- Bounce and pop on every word of a slow, serious video, which makes it feel like a joke.
- Captions that change faster than anyone can read them.
- A keyword colour that clashes with the product's own colours.
- So many emoji that the text is hard to find among them.
- Captions burned into a video that the platform then captions again, leaving two sets of words on screen.

## Questions, answered.

**Are animated captions burned into the video?**

In Bang AI, yes. Captions are [burned in](https://morebangers.com/glossary/burned-in-captions/), so they show wherever you post. Bang AI doesn't export SRT or VTT caption files.

**What is the difference between karaoke and word-by-word captions?**

Word-by-word shows words as they are spoken. Karaoke shows a line and highlights the word being said, so you see the sentence and where the voice is in it.

**Can I get a copy of the video without captions?**

Yes, on iPhone and the Mac. Export Pack makes each shape with captions and without, for platforms that add their own.

**How do I fix a wrong word in the captions?**

Tap the caption in the iPhone and Mac apps, or select it and press Edit words on the web. Fixing the line in the script fixes the caption too.

**Does changing the animation cost anything in Bang AI?**

No. Captions are charged once per edit, and restyling them, changing the animation, fixing words and refreshing keywords and emoji on that edit cost nothing more. [Credits](https://morebangers.com/help/credits/) explains what does cost credits.

**Can my AI chat change the caption look?**

Yes. ChatGPT, Claude and Claude Code can change the look, fix or split a line and mark a word with a colour or emoji. They can't run the AI's keywords and emoji.
